Since the start of her career, the colour black has been the stylistic hallmark of Mimma Russo's poetics. Her work continuously challenges the threshold of chromatic perception in search of new tonal modulations. Her works are never inert, but rather each piece interacts with light differently and is imbued with its own distinctive vitality. Thus each surface can be either profound or reflective or possess both properties depending on how it is viewed.

Black, the ultimate point of the chiaroscuro contrast, is explored in its chromatic essence, as the non-colour capable of absorbing and containing all colours and expressing itself in an almost infinite scale of tones depending on the light, the pigment combinations used by the artist as well as the visual acuity of one's individual sensory threshold.

The material of choice for Mimma Russo is wood, which not only serves as a versatile surface for her paintings but is also used to create three-dimensional modular sculptures. In her most recent works shown in the exhibition, the artist introduces the use of crystals, paper, glass and mirrored steel, and experiments with new colour combinations.
