In the wake of the major retrospective curated by Gianfranco Maraniello at the Museo Madre in Naples, and twenty-seven years after his first exhibition at Studio Trisorio, the gallery would like honour the artist three years after his death by exhibiting a series of works on paper selected in collaboration with Lucy Jones Carroll.

Lawrence Carroll was one of the most unique personalities in the world of painting for his ability to go beyond the bi-dimensionality of painting as he considered the canvas in terms of a "body". Even in his works on paper, which the artist continued to realize throughout his entire career, his "profound" vision of the surface is extraordinarily and intensely palpable.

The drawings express the most intimate dimension of his work and invariably reiterate his poetics. The surfaces of these small and large-scale works reveal dense layerings. At times, saturated colors such as black, red, green, ochre and blue appear next to Carroll's characteristic white which is never pure, but wanes into its warmest hues as if intentionally soiled to reflect the passage of time and the fickleness of light and of things.

Lawrence Carroll interacts with surfaces by slowly superimposing layers of paint, and allowing the original weave of the paper and the pencil marks to emerge between the subtle layers of color and, as in his works on canvas, at times fragments of various materials are inserted to created "places of memory" in which the observer's gaze is lost and then recovered.
